Back to My Mac doesn't work over Internet

I followed all of the directions for setting up Back To My Mac on both my wife's mac and mine.  It worked perfectly over the local network at home.  However, when I tested it over the internet at a local restaurant, it didn't work.  I tried it again at a hotel and it still doesn't work.  Why would it work perfectly over the local network and not over the internet?  I've ensured that Remote Login, Screen Sharing and File Sharing are enabled on both macs.

it is likely not working because many public places like restaurants, hotels, even Apple Stores put blocks on the network level to prevent such uses, just like they block known porn sites, large file downloads (to keep you from using them to torrent) and so on
