I recently got my mid 2009 battery replaced at the apple store. I was wondering if they replaced it with a battery from 2009 or an upgraded one from say 2011 or 2012?

Mid 2009 Macs have essentially the same battery chemistry as is found in current models. So, it is highly possible that its new.
