That statement could very well be correct. As of now, no matter what anyone says, there is no proof of any product releases. Upon further investigation, however, there is obvious preparation for a new product model by carriers and accessory manufacturers. Apple also will hold some sort of keynote tomorrow. Rest assured, you can expect to see the new iPhone unveiled. The odds are in your favor.
Though I'll accept the alternate interpretation that Apple won't be releasing their 6th phone with an A6 processor running iOS 6 and calling it "iPhone 5".
Apple is such a large company, that they can't really tell any of their people (other than those very high up the chain) what is or isn't going to happen. The Apple staff, no matter what rumours they may have heard themselves, are instructed unequivocally not to say anything until an official announcement has been made.
The known facts are: an invitation for some kind of announcement was sent to a number of tech media and journo's for the 12th. And the shadow of the 12 on the invite created a 5.
Apple aren't in the business of deliberately disappointing people.
